Basic Doggy Tricks

Hey guys and welcome back to blog! If you’re new here, be sure to check out my other posts. You can discover some good books to read, hear a little about my life, and more. You won’t want to miss my new posts either, so if you want, subscribe!

We all love our dogs. From the big ones to the small ones, they are always there to give us a paw and they love us no matter what. My pup is a mix, half beagle and half Yorkshire terrier (though we think he has some Dachshund in him too.) His name is Milo and he is the cutest! He does kinda need a haircut though…

Anyway, today I’m going to be teaching you guys some beginner dog tricks to teach your pup. It’s so fun to train your dog to do cool things like shake or roll over, but sometimes it can be a little difficult getting started. First, you have to find the right YouTube video or article that can teach you but still be right for your dog. Because not all pups are the same! Some might be quicker learners that others, and that’s ok. I hope you learn something from these steps that I’m about to get into, so that your dog might get even more adorable! (If that’s even possible!) All of the steps worked for Milo, and he was able to learn them within a few days' time, so hopefully your dog will too.

Before we get started I want to say that I am not a professional, but by using the steps I have put together for you guys below, I was able to teach my dog. Also, be kind to your dog! If he/she doesn’t get it the first time, it’s ok. No need to get mad at him/her. These things take time and practice. Lastly, a treat will definitely come in handy when training your dog. You can also use a toy or cuddle time as a reward or incentive, but I’ve found that treats work the best for Milo. 😂

BASIC DOGGY TRICKS TO TEACH YOUR PUP:

  • Sit

       Difficulty Level: ⅕

       Steps:

  1. Hold the treat in front of your dog

  2. Push gently on their butt while at the same time saying “sit” in a firm voice

  3. Give treat

  4. Repeat this process until your dog can sit without you helping them

*Tip: I use my finger to point when I say sit. It helps to get your dog’s attention and show him/her what you want them to do. This is trick is super easy and should come naturally to your dog.

  • Paw 🐾

       Difficulty Level: ⅕

       Steps:

  1. Kneel down until you are close to your dog

  2. Tell your dog to sit using one hand

  3. Using the other hand, grab your dog’s paw, while at the same time saying “paw” in a firm voice

  4. Give treat

-This helps your dog to get an understanding of the command. Soon, they’ll be able to do it on their own!-

  1. Repeat until you get to the point where you can simply stick out your hand and say “paw” and your dog will do it.

*Tip: It is good to look your dog in the eyes while giving commands. If you are not looking at them, they might get confused or distracted and not perform the trick correctly. This trick is for beginners, but will make your dog look classy and sophisticated as he/she shakes people’s hands.

  • Stay

Difficulty Level: ⅗

       Steps:

  1. Stay off by standing close to your dog. Tell your pup to sit.

  2. Looking into your dog’s eyes while holding a treat, point your finger and say “stay” in a firm voice.

  3. Slowly back away from your dog

  4. Try to get at least 5 steps away before rewarding

-Some dogs take longer than others to learn this. The key to this trick is repetition. Repeat these steps over and over until your dog has a good understanding of what you want them to do. -

  1. Once your dog has mastered 5 steps, try moving farther away

  2. Still facing your dog, try moving 10 steps away, then 15, then 20.

  3. Once you are able to move a good length away from your dog, the final step is to not look at your dog, or to go to a place where your dog cannot see you.

  4. Tell them to stay, then instead of looking at them, turn away and walk into a different room.

  5. Come back after a short period of time and reward if your dog stayed.

-Keep practicing! If your dog doesn’t get it at first, keep repeating the steps. But importantly, do not wear your dog out! If you notice he/she is getting tired, or you’ve been practicing for a long time, take a break and try again later. Your dog will thank you by performing well the next time you try. -

*Tip: Reward every time your dog stays, but do not give a treat if they stood up or followed you. This will teach your dog bad habits that are not correct and hard to break.

  • Come

       Difficulty Level: ⅖

       Steps:

  1. Tell your dog to sit, then stay.

  2. While holding a treat back away from your dog

  3. Pause a few feet away, then pat your legs and say come!

  4. Reward if your dog came up to you

  5. Practice this in real life. When your dog is simply sitting down or is outside chillin, surprise them by saying come. Practice makes perfect!

-If your dog sits there with a confused expression, try getting down on your knees, looking your dog in the eyes, then pat your legs and say come. You can also say come here boy or girl, your dog’s name, come on, etc. Whatever works for your dog. Make sure to practice! -

*Tip: in order for this to work you need to teach your dog to stay. All of these tricks should be taught in the order mentioned, so it will be easier to train your dog. Come should be pretty easy to learn, as it is almost an instinct for dogs to come when you pat your legs, or call the word come or their name.

The Correct Order to Teach Your Dog These Tricks:

-Sit

-Paw

-Stay

-Come

I hope you guys learned something from this post and enjoyed it! You can always come back to it when you feel like teaching your dog a new trick. Seeing my dog perform these makes me really happy to know that I taught him something cool like that and it is really adorable. Make sure to practice these tricks every day, or at least often. Even if your dog gets the trick right away (and some will; every dog is different) you should still practice to prevent your pup from getting rusty and forgetting the trick. All of these are great to teach puppies, or any dog really, because they are just the easy, basic steps. If you’re looking for something a little more challenging for your dog, then stay tuned for my post of advanced doggy tricks. It will have more steps for you to learn, but they will be a little harder but still really cool to teach your dog. I’ll be posting that soon, so keep reading my blog! Also if you found that these steps didn’t really work for your dog, I’d recommend this free app called Puppr. It is a dog training app and it helped me teach Milo a lot. So check that out if you’re interested! Thank you guys so much for reading, and I’ll see you soon. Bye!
