Homemade Boba Tea Recipe: How to Make The Delicious Drink

Updated: Aug 7, 2020

Are you guys a fan of trying exotic, tasty, food and drinks? If so, keep reading, because today I’m going to teach you how to make one of my favorites, boba tea!

I recently made this drink a couple days ago, and I loved it. I’ve been wanting to make it for a while now, as it is on my summer bucket list. I’ve also heard it be claimed as really tasty, and it’s so cute! So I decided to make my own!

Boba tea can go by many names. For one, you might hear it be called bubble tea. Whatever the name, both represent a delicious and cute drink. Boba has become very popular lately, and is a great summer drink when it is cold. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of places that sell boba in the U.S. They might be far away or expensive. But don’t worry! Today I’m going to teach you how to make a simple boba milk tea drink using affordable and at home ingredients.

What is Boba Tea?

Boba tea originated from Taiwan, and has since then traveled to the U.S. At first, the tapioca pearls or “blobs in my drink” as some like to call it, were used in shaved ice desserts. (I, for one, would love to try some boba ice.) Milk tea was popular at the time, and some genius had the idea to merge the two, producing a delicious drink!

Boba tea is made up of tea bases, with the most popular being black, green, or white. You can add many toppings and flavors as well. Ice is typically blended into the drink, producing a cool and refreshing beverage.

Now you can get many types of boba, including a fruity kind that I have yet to try. However, today I’m going to be teaching you the milk tea recipe, as it is the OG.

Health Benefits

When made at home, boba can have many health benefits. These include:

  • Strengthens the immune system- Green tea is one of the most popular flavors, and it contains numerous antioxidants that relieve stress. Adding fruit in addition can also provide you a healthy dose of vitamin C.

  • Energy Boost- The sugar and caffeine in Boba make this drink a great source of energy, and will leave you feeling up and at em for the rest of your day. Just make sure you don’t overdo it lol.

  • Heart health- If you make a healthy version of boba, the antioxidants are known to strengthen the blood vessel walls and prevent the arteries from forming plaque.

How to Make Boba Tea

Boba can be very simple to make when you follow this recipe. However, it does take at least an hour, not because you’re constantly cooking, but because boba takes a lot of waiting. Trust me, I know. Also, FYI, this is only one serving. If you would like more, double the recipe.

Before we get into the steps, you’re going to need some ingredients. To make boba you’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • ¼ Tapioca Pearls- We got ours off of Amazon for less than 10 dollars. I don’t know the brand name, as it’s not in English, but just make sure you get the black kind.

  • Milk- You can use whatever kind, whether it’s plant milk, almond milk, soy milk, or just regular milk.

  • Sugar

  • Water

  • Tea- We used a Tazo zen green tea bag and it tasted really good.

  • Ice (optional)

  • Fruit (optional)

Directions:

  1. First you are going to measure 2 cups of water and pour it into a saucepan. Boil the water over high heat.

  2. Next measure ¼ cup tapioca pearls, and pour them into the water. Stir them gently until they start to float on top. Let them cook for 12-15 min.

  3. Turn off the heat, take the pan off the stove, cover it, and let the boba cool for 12-15 min.

  4. While waiting for the boba to cool, boil ½ cup water on the stove over high heat. Take the water off, and stir ½ cup sugar into it, until the sugar is dissolved. This will be the sugar water designed to sweeten and flavor the boba. Set the water aside to cool.

  5. Next we’re going to make the tea. Boil 1 cup water on the stove. Add the tea bag after you take the water off, use 1 tea bag for regular flavor, two for stronger flavor. Wait 15 minutes before taking the bag out, then chill the tea.

  6. Once the boba is done cooking, drain them from the water and transfer them to a small bowl or container. Pour the sugar syrup over the boba until they are completely submerged. Let the boba sit for 15 min, then refrigerate until ready to use. The minimum waiting time should be 15 minutes until you can use the boba, and you can only use it for a couple of days.

  7. To make a cold boba, combine the milk, tea, and a couple of ice cubes into a cocktail shaker and shake for 20 seconds. Do not shake the boba!

  8. Pour the drink into a tall glass and then add the boba.

*Note: Enjoy this drink with a fat straw so that you can suck up all the delicious boba balls!

Hope you guys liked this recipe and are going to give it a try! I personally enjoyed this drink, though the boba does have a very chewy texture. But I didn’t mind! Overall this was a great drink and I loved it. Anyways, I’ll see you guys next time! 👋

—Update- I just made boba tea for the second time and it tasted REALLY GOOD and I gotta say it was way easier to make than the first time. Basically all you have to do is 1) cook the boba 2) rinse it off in cool water 3) mix tea (I used a Cinnamon one),milk (I used almond), and, this is optional, add 2 tablespoons of vanilla to the cocktail mixer and shake it. Then lastly, add the boba. this is a way easier and simpler way to make boba. Heres a picture:

Yum!
